FORECAST:
The heaviest rain fell this morning, but a few showers remain possible into the afternoon. Skies remain cloudy with temperatures hovering in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
Tuesday night we start to transition from rain to snow from northwest to southeast as colder air filters down and another system develops to provide more moisture.
Northwestern sections of our area will see the transition to winter precipitation perhaps as early as the evening, with the rest of us getting the transition closer to midnight. Everyone sees winter weather after midnight tonight into Wednesday morning.
Wednesday will bring snow showers, and the snow will be heavy at times. However, by Wednesday afternoon the system will pull away, and skies will slowly start to clear. Highs on Wednesday are stuck in the upper 30s.
SNOW SPECIFICS (Tonight and Wednesday)
• TIMING: Snow starts late tonight into Wednesday morning.
• TOTALS: Coating for Southside, 1-3” for Lynchburg and Central Virginia, 2-5” for areas west of the Blue Ridge. Higher totals North of I-64 and out to the west along the Virginia/West Virginia border.
• IMPACTS: Most accumulations should hold to the grassy surfaces; road temperatures are very warm. The sun angle also doesn’t help snow lovers.
We'll dry out for Thursday and Friday with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s.
Martinsville race weekend is looking somewhat active, too. Rain chances exist on Saturday and Sunday. Once again, possibly mixing with a few wet snowflakes. We will keep an eye on this, too. As always, keep checking back for updates.
