UPDATE: 1 Dead, and 1 Officer Wounded in Amherst Co

A person is dead and a deputy was shot and injured after a crash in Amherst County Sunday.

The Amherst County Sheriff's Office said a vehicle crashed while traveling along Geddes Mountain Road around 11:20am Sunday morning.

They said as deputies engaged with the driver of the vehicle, a deputy was shot.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead.

The deputy was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Appomattox Field Office is at the scene and investigating.

The Amherst County Sheriff's Office is asking that you avoid using Route 29 north and south near Route 151 for the immediate future.
