Lynchburg 22-Month-Old Dies After Being Abused by Mother

UPDATE:

On Saturday, August 11, the City of Lynchburg’s Human Services Department received a complaint regarding potential child abuse and neglect of a 22-month-old child at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Child Protective Services personnel responded to the hospital and thereafter, took appropriate action to protect the child who was transported to the University of Virginia Hospital. Unfortunately, the child passed away at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at the University of Virginia Hospital.

Under Virginia law, all information contained in the files of the Lynchburg Human Services Department is confidential and may not be released.  Accordingly, no further statements will be made concerning this matter. The Lynchburg Police Department said it's investigating a child's death at the hands of her mother in Lynchburg.

Police said officers responded to Lynchburg General Hospital on Saturday, August 11 for an injured child who had been brought there by her mother.

on initial findings, members of the Criminal Investigations Unit responded and began to look into why the child was brought into the hospital.

Due to the extent of her injuries, the 22-month-old child was taken to UVA Medical Center for further treatment.

A preliminary investigation led to charges against the child's mother for felony child abuse.

Fantasia Ashante Lane, 20, of Lynchburg was arrested and taken to Blue Ridge Regional Jail where she was held without bond.
