Bride Seeks Help Because Groom’s Last Name Is The Same As Her First

While tradition states that brides should take their husband’s surname when they get married, these days a lot of modern women choose to keep their own or at least hyphenate their name, but one woman can’t quite make a decision, and she has a unique reason for it.

A bride-to-be took to the wedding forum Weddingbee to ask for advice regarding her predicament. While she wants to take her fiancé’s last name, the problem is it’s the same as her first name. “My first name (Shannon) is my fiance's last name,” she shares. “Honestly it never bothered me even when people made jokes. His last name didn't matter to me because I love him.”

While she understands the easy thing would be to just keep her own name she’s torn because she does want to have the same last name as any future kids they may have. She asks, “Has anyone else been in this situation?"

  • The post received several responses, with many suggesting she just keep her name, while one person suggested making the husband do the changing, writing, “I know this isn't traditional, but considering the circumstances, have you two considered your maiden name becoming the family name?”
  • Others suggested both the bride and the groom pick a completel different last name and one person had an even more unique solution, noting, “This is your opportunity to become like Cher or Madonna… just be Shannon!”
  • Still, plenty of people encouraged the bride to just take her groom’s name and accept the double name. As one person shared, “'I love the idea of Shannon Shannon. If you've always wanted to change your name to your husband’s then go for it.”
