Virginia lawmakers pass bill to fight spoofing calls in the state

A bill to get rid of the annoying spam calls that pop up on your caller ID and appear to be from a familiar phone number has passed both the Virginia House and Senate.

Del. Emily Brewer introduced HB 2170 hat she said would give law enforcement another tool in their toolbox to be able to go after scammers.

A bill that would have made spoofing illegal in Virginia failed to make it out of the house.

The bill introduced by Brewer would allow people to report the incoming call number to police, where they would decide if there is a need to track down the number.

It would make it a class 3 misdemeanor to intimidate, defraud, or harass.

The bill also raises the penalty to a Class 2 misdemeanor for a second or subsequent conviction.

It's now headed to to Governor Ralph Northam's desk and if he signs it, will be law in July.
